Meeting against the war

Judith Orr speaks to large meeting

Some 70 people crammed into the Hackney Stop the War meeting on Thursday 17 December 2015.

Kevin Courtney, Deputy General Secretary of the National Union and Teachers, and Judith Orr, a Stop the War Coalition national officer denounced the Tory government’s decision to bomb Syria, which will only increase the likelihood of more terrorist attacks.

Kevin talked of his union’s concern at the targeting of Muslim children in schools under the pretext of combatting “radicalisation.” This will create fear and prevent open discussion of issues.

Judith condemned the 66 Labour MPs voting with the government, the media campaign against opponents to the bombing, Islamophobia and the anti-refugee rhetoric.

She also pointed to the fact that the government can find money for war but not for vital services, such as health and education.

A representative of a Turkish and Kurdish community organisation talked of repression by Turkey. Another audience member talked of solidarity aid to refugees at Calais. Others condemned the interference by outside powers and the repressive nature of all the regimes in the region.

The meeting collected £119.53.
